A Komodo family cabin is rarely a dedicated room type. According to komodoislandcruises.com, an operator, most boats offer ensuite cabins for two adults, and some take a child as an extra passenger. Families usually choose between a double with an extra bed, a suite for four, adjacent cabins, a bunk room, or taking the whole boat.

What does a Komodo family cabin usually consist of?

Expect to assemble a sleeping plan instead of picking a room type from a menu. komodoislandcruises.com describes a fleet built mostly around private ensuite cabins for two adults. Some boats add a child as an extra passenger, with or without another bed, and cabins designed with families in mind are few. Every example below is one operator's boat or one writer's experience, so use them as patterns to ask about. Cabins only come up on a multi-day Komodo family trip, so set them against the Komodo family trip cost early.

The price table on this page shows three published examples: a Family Suite per person, a shared listing restricted to ages 15 and up, and a whole-boat listing. They differ in basis, so compare them only after converting each to a total for your family. If the cabin question is pushing you toward taking the whole vessel, read private or shared boat for a family and our overview of Komodo family boats. Timing is part of the same decision, since Neptune, an operator, warns that triple and bunk cabins are scarce and go first in school-holiday weeks; lead times are on our page about Komodo in school holidays.

Can children sleep in the parents' cabin?

On some boats, yes, but the answer depends on layout and age. Ask three separate things: whether the boat allows it, whether a bed is added or the child shares yours, and how the child is charged in that arrangement. Ask for cabin measurements, because a cabin built for two adults leaves little floor once a third person and luggage arrive.

Age changes what you should weigh. Komodo Resort, an operator, counts confined space among the things under-8s find hard on a boat, and it would steer those families to a shorter trip or a resort base. For a parent, that means a tight cabin on a first night aboard is a test of the whole trip, not a detail. A short sailing is a sensible way to find out how a small child copes.

Upper berths deserve their own question. No source we can cite rates bunk safety on any Komodo boat, so decide from what you can see: ask for a photo showing the berth height and any rail, then judge it against your child's sleep habits. Dive Concepts' description of its bunk cabin as ideal for children or teenagers is a listing's phrase and tells you nothing about rails.

What is different about a lower-deck cabin?

Asik Travel, an operator, says a lower-deck cabin is warmer, has a small porthole and picks up engine noise, while sailing the same route as the suites above. Neptune Liveaboards, meanwhile, recommends a lower-deck pair for families because the cabins can sit beside each other. Those positions fit together: the lower deck can solve the adjacency problem while costing you some comfort.

Noise and heat matter more for a child who wakes easily. komodoislandcruises.com says a generator runs at night to power air conditioning, so ask what hours it runs, what happens to the cabin temperature if it stops, and how far your berth is from the engine and generator. Go Live Young's open-door nights on a basic boat show the fallback when a cabin gets hot, and that option looks very different with a toddler on board.

Cabin position also comes up when a child gets queasy on boats. Our guide to seasickness with children in Komodo sets out what health sources do and do not say on that.

What should you ask for before booking?

komodoislandcruises.com advises requesting real cabin photos or a layout plan. That single request removes most surprises, since a plan shows deck, neighbours and bathroom access at once. Its family checklist also covers items that apply beyond the cabin. A full request looks like this:

  • Current photographs of the exact cabin and a deck plan with it marked.
  • Number and size of beds, and who sleeps where for your family.
  • Whether the bathroom is ensuite on every cabin you are taking.
  • Air conditioning in all cabins, and generator hours overnight.
  • Child-sized life jackets and where they are stored relative to the cabin.
  • Secure railings on the route from cabin to deck.
  • Emergency communication equipment on board.
  • Child-friendly food and crew experience with families.

Adjacent does not mean connected. Ask whether the cabins connect, and assume they do not until shown a door. If an older child sleeps alone next door, settle how they reach you at night and whether they can open their own door from inside.

Do added cabins raise any safety question?

A Labuan Bajo boat entrepreneur, speaking to Kompas, argued that fitting extra rooms or stretching decks on a pinisi disregards balance and leaves the boat more prone to overturn. That is one person's view, reported in the press, and it is not a finding about any particular vessel. It bears on families in one specific way: ask whether the extra berths you are offered are part of the boat's original layout.

Ask directly whether the cabin you are being offered was part of the original build or added later, and what documents cover the change. A vague answer tells you something too. Our boat safety questions for Komodo page lists what else to raise with a seller. This site does not rank boats by safety, because no published audit is available to base a ranking on.

What else do parents ask about family cabins?

Do Komodo boats have family cabins?

A few do. Labuan Bajo Tourism, an operator, describes a Family Suite for up to four on one of its boats, but komodoislandcruises.com says most cabins are built for two adults and family layouts are few.

Can a child share a cabin with parents on a Komodo boat?

Some boats allow it, with or without an extra bed depending on layout, according to komodoislandcruises.com. Confirm the sleeping arrangement and how the child is charged before you pay.

Which deck is best for a family cabin on a Komodo boat?

It is a trade-off. Neptune Liveaboards favours a lower-deck pair beside the parents, and Asik Travel says lower-deck cabins are warmer, with a small porthole and engine noise. Choose after seeing the deck plan.

Do family cabins sell out during school holidays?

Neptune Liveaboards warns that triple and bunk cabins are scarce and go first in school-holiday weeks. Our guide to Komodo in school holidays covers lead times.

Can parents request connecting cabins on a Komodo boat?

You can ask, but the sources here describe adjacent cabins and not connecting doors. Check the deck plan and settle how a child sleeping next door would reach you at night.

Do Komodo boat cabins have private bathrooms?

Many listings describe ensuite cabins, including Labuan Bajo Tourism's boat and Dive Concepts' phinisi, but this varies. Go Live Young's small wooden boat in 2017 had a small bathroom for two small cabins, so confirm it for the cabin you are offered.

Which published prices did we check?

Official park fees and public third-party listings, each with its source and the month we checked it. These are not our prices or offers. Fees and fares change, and sources sometimes disagree, so check the source before you rely on a figure.
