Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. Fees and fares change, and they are third-party figures, not our offers.

The Komodo minimum age for children is not a single number. No official park statement setting one has turned up, and the claim that none exists comes from operators such as Hello Flores and Komodo Resort. Working limits come from each boat, walk and dive agency, so one child can be accepted on one boat and refused on the next.

Does the park set a Komodo minimum age for children?

We know of no park statement on this. The claim that none exists comes from businesses that sell trips. Hello Flores describes no official park-wide minimum on Komodo liveaboards, with each operator choosing its own threshold, typically somewhere from 5 to 10. Komodo Resort makes the same claim about entering the park itself. Read both as operators' understanding, not as a ruling. On the best age, Komodo Island Cruises, an operator, calls eight to twelve the sweet spot and Komodo Resort calls 9 to 12 the ideal adventure age. Other sellers name different ages, as the table shows. Age is the second decision in planning Komodo with kids, right after the boat.

The nearest official document is the park's published tariff, and it deals with tickets. Its visitor categories are domestic tourist, domestic student group of at least five, and foreign tourist, with no child or infant line. Ask the ranger station or operator about a particular trail for a five-year-old.

A missing park rule also opens nothing for you. A boat can still decline a child, a product can carry its own age floor, and a guide can advise against a walk. Komodo Resort adds that guides commonly recommend 5 to 6 for dragon trekking, which is custom and not a published limit.

What ages do operators state?

Each row below belongs to the source named in it. None is a park rule, and several are suggestions, not conditions of sale.

What ages do operators state?
SourceApplies toStated age
Neptune Liveaboards (operator)Scheduled mixed-group liveaboards in IndonesiaTen on most boats. Its own exception starts at eight, on selected departures, when a parent supervises and the child snorkels. No toddlers aboard, in its view.
Komodo Resort FAQ (operator)Its own liveaboardsChildren accepted at the parents' full responsibility; infants up to 2 on request
Asik Travel (operator)Suggested ages by trip typeAbout 6 and up for most families, about 10 and up for a liveaboard, day trips from about 5, any age on a private charter planned gently
AYANA Komodo Cruises (operator)Its Rinca Island Walk, on private charter tripsAges 12 and above
TourRadar (marketplace)One shared luxury phinisi voyage from operator Pesona IndoAges 15 and up
Casa de Capulet (Labuan Bajo hotel)The classic programmeMarquee activities generally not the right fit for toddlers and babies; children over 10 can manage much more
Roamee (travel publisher)Dragon treks, snorkeling and the Padar hikeAround 10 and up handle them well; younger children need careful supervision around dragons and on choppier boats

Two kinds of statement sit in that table. AYANA's walk, the TourRadar listing and Neptune's scheduled departures are product conditions: with a younger child, expect a refusal or a request for an exception. Asik Travel (an operator), Casa de Capulet (a hotel) and Roamee (a publisher) are offering judgement, which helps with planning but is not a boarding condition.

That split explains why the same child can be fine on one boat and refused on another. Take an eight-year-old. By Neptune's account most scheduled mixed-group boats say no, while Neptune itself says yes on selected departures from age eight. Komodo Resort's family guide puts that child within range for the Komodo Island trek. AYANA's Rinca walk would not fit at all. On a private boat, Asik Travel sees any age as possible if the plan is gentle. Nothing about the child changed between those answers.

How do age rules differ by activity?

Ask about each activity separately, because a yes to the boat does not settle the walks or the water.

  • Dragon walks. Komodo Resort rates Rinca's short and medium treks as manageable for children 5 and up, and Komodo Island as better suited to 8 and above. komodoislandcruises.com calls the Rinca walk shorter and more shaded. Our page on Komodo dragons with kids covers conduct on the trail.
  • Padar. Komodo Resort describes a trail that is steep in places with no shade, best done early with plenty of water. It says children 7 and older usually manage it, while toddlers and younger children will struggle.
  • Nights aboard. The same operator flags tight quarters, the chance of seasickness and early starts as hard on under-8s, and points those families to a shorter trip or a resort stay.
  • The youngest children. Our guide to Komodo with toddlers picks up where most boat rules stop.

Birthdays are a weak test on their own. The most usable standard here comes from a family and not a company. Go Live Young, writing in 2017 with children aged 8, 10 and 12, wants a child who can walk for 90 minutes without help, respond to instructions fast and keep quiet on demand. Below mature seven and eight year olds, that family advises against dragon trekking. It is one household's view and it is dated, but you can try all three at home before you commit to anything.

What changes at each age?

Set your child's age on the departure date against this list. Every line is a claim by the named source, and a child who clears a line can still be refused by a particular boat.

What changes at each age?
AgeWhat is stated, and by whom
Up to 2Komodo Resort takes infants on request on its liveaboards. Neptune Liveaboards would not put a toddler aboard. Casa de Capulet considers the marquee activities generally the wrong fit.
5 to 6Komodo Resort: guides commonly recommend this range for dragon trekking, and Rinca's short and medium treks are manageable from 5. Asik Travel: day trips from about 5, and about 6 and up for most families.
7Komodo Resort: children this age usually manage the Padar trail.
8Komodo Resort: Komodo Island becomes the better fit. PADI: Bubblemaker opens. Neptune Liveaboards: its own exception on selected departures.
10Neptune Liveaboards: the usual floor on scheduled mixed-group boats. Asik Travel: liveaboards from about here. Roamee: treks, snorkeling and Padar handled well. KomodoDiving: junior certified diving to 12 metres.
12AYANA: its Rinca walk opens. KomodoDiving: junior certified diving to 18 metres.
15TourRadar: one shared phinisi listing starts here.

The list thins out below 5. Beyond Komodo Resort's infant policy and Asik Travel's view of private charters, little here helps the parent of a three- or four-year-old, so ask each boat directly. A nine-year-old is the awkward case in the other direction: past most of the walking suggestions, yet under the floor Neptune describes for most scheduled departures.

Do children pay park tickets?

Sources conflict, and this page will not call children free or charged. Komodo Resort's FAQ exempts ages 0 to 6 from park tickets. Neptune Liveaboards says fees fall on each person whatever the age in most cases, with a lower fee only where the park offers one. Go Live Young saw no child prices in 2017. The tariff shows no child category, although absence from a table does not prove that no exemption exists. The foreign visitor tariff and one operator's infant rate are in the price table on this page.

Boat fares diverge as well. Komodo Resort's FAQ charges children 3 and older as adults less 20 percent, with infants at a set nightly rate. Neptune, its sister company, prices children as adults according to its snorkeling guide, and cites a harbour master's manifest that treats each passenger alike. Our Komodo family trip cost guide shows what this does to a budget.

What do dive agencies require?

Diving is the one activity where an official rule and agency limits both apply. The park's protocol prohibits scuba diving at park dive sites without dive certification. PADI's Bubblemaker starts at age 8 and stays in less than 2 metres of water, led by a PADI Pro, with a parent's approval and no experience required. KomodoDiving, an operator, caps junior certified divers at 12 metres for ages 10 to 11 and 18 metres for ages 12 to 14, always alongside a certified adult or professional. Neptune gives the same depth limits.

One question stays open: how supervised introductory dives are handled inside the park. If your child's plan depends on one, ask the dive operator where the session would take place and how it fits the certification rule. The guide to kids scuba diving in Komodo goes further.

What should you get in writing?

An age question is easiest to settle before money moves. Ask for written answers to these:

  1. Does this boat accept each child, using the child's age on the departure date?
  2. Is the age limit the boat's, the product's, or a guide's recommendation?
  3. Which walks and water activities may each child join, and who decides on the day?
  4. Who carries responsibility for the child aboard? Komodo Resort's wording places it fully with the parents.
  5. What is the child's line on the invoice for the boat and for park tickets?

What else do parents ask about Komodo age limits?

Is there a minimum age for Komodo National Park?

Operators including Hello Flores and Komodo Resort say there is no official minimum. Limits in practice come from boats, products and guides.

What age can children go on a Komodo liveaboard?

It depends on the boat. Neptune Liveaboards says most scheduled mixed-group departures set ten and that it takes eight-year-olds on selected departures. Asik Travel suggests about 10 and up, and one TourRadar listing says 15 and up.

Do Komodo boats accept toddlers?

Some do and some will not. Komodo Resort's FAQ takes infants up to 2 on request, while Neptune Liveaboards says it would not put a toddler aboard. Asik Travel sees private charters as the route for any age.

Do children pay Komodo park tickets?

Sources conflict. One operator says children aged 0 to 6 do not pay, another says fees apply per person regardless of age in most cases, and the tariff shows no child category. Get the child line confirmed in writing.

What is the youngest age for a Komodo dragon trek?

No published limit is available. Komodo Resort says guides commonly recommend 5 to 6 and rates Rinca from 5 and Komodo Island from 8. AYANA's own Rinca walk is listed for ages 12 and above.

Which published prices did we check?

Official park fees and public third-party listings, each with its source and the month we checked it. These are not our prices or offers. Fees and fares change, and sources sometimes disagree, so check the source before you rely on a figure.

How do I reach the desk?

Send each child's age on the travel date and the activities that matter most to you. The desk answers with what it can establish, but it cannot promise that a given boat will accept a given child, and only an accepted offer binds. Requests through the desk can lead to a paid booking, so we have a commercial interest; the disclaimer sets out how that works.
