Bali to Labuan Bajo with kids is a short hop: the operator Neptune Liveaboards puts the flight at about one hour fifteen minutes. The risk lies in the connection, not the air time. Neptune warns that domestic schedules change at short notice, and the operator Labuan Bajo Tourism says day boats leave before the first flights land, so arrive the day before and keep slack at the end.
How long is the flight from Bali to Labuan Bajo with kids?
The flight is about one hour fifteen minutes, according to Neptune Liveaboards, which also says three to four airlines fly the route, with more daily flights in the June to September peak than in December and January. That is short enough to get through on snacks and a tablet. For a family it is rarely the flight itself that causes the difficulty, but what sits around it.
| Leg | Time given | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Bali to Labuan Bajo, by air | About 1 hour 15 minutes | Neptune Liveaboards, an operator |
| Jakarta to Labuan Bajo, direct by air | About 2.5 hours | Neptune Liveaboards |
| Komodo Airport to Labuan Bajo, by car | About 10 minutes | Bali.com, a publisher |
| Labuan Bajo to the harbour where liveaboards moor, by car | About 10 minutes | Komodo Resort, an operator |
Bali.com lists direct flights to Komodo Airport from Bali, Jakarta and Surabaya, so Bali is not the only way in. Coming through Jakarta has its own catch: Neptune Liveaboards says the domestic Garuda departure from Terminal 3 needs a two-hour minimum connection. A family moving two children and a pushchair through a large airport needs well over that.
The ground legs at the far end are short by any standard. Komodo Resort, an operator, says Labuan Bajo is about 10 minutes by car from the harbour where liveaboards moor. Sort out transfers beforehand if you can, and ask about child seats if they matter to you. The price table on this page shows the fare estimates that Neptune Liveaboards publishes. They are estimates by an operator, not live fares, so check with the airline.
Should you stop overnight first?
Yes, if a boat is waiting at the other end. Labuan Bajo Tourism, an operator, says to fly in by late afternoon the day before a tour, because day trips leave before the first morning flights land. It also says to plan four days in total for a three-day cruise from Bali. Neptune Liveaboards warns that domestic schedules change without much notice and advises against the earliest flight on boarding day. Between them, those points argue for one extra hotel night.
A spare night does more than cover a late flight. Your children arrive, eat and sleep before an early start, and you get time to buy whatever was forgotten. Our guide to Labuan Bajo with kids looks at what a family can do with that time, and our family itinerary page shows how the rest of the trip fits around it.
The other end of the trip deserves the same care. A volcanic eruption shut Komodo Airport from 9 to 19 November 2024 and left passengers stranded, Wikipedia reports. An event like that cannot be planned around in detail, but it is a good reason not to book a same-day long-haul connection out of Bali. Consider these three layouts:
- Tightest: land in Bali, connect the same day, board the next morning. This works when everything goes right.
- With slack: a night in Bali to recover, an afternoon flight the next day, a night in Labuan Bajo, then the boat.
- Going home: leave a night in Bali between your last boat day and the long-haul flight, and more if the ticket home is hard to change.
What should you know about bags?
Neptune Liveaboards says the 7 kg cabin bag rule is enforced selectively. Selective enforcement is the awkward kind, because it means you cannot predict the check-in desk, and a family juggling several bags has more to lose. Assume it will be enforced, and check with your airline what each child and infant is allowed.
A few habits help on short domestic flights:
- Keep medicines, one change of clothes per child and anything you could not replace in the cabin bag.
- Put swim gear, sun protection and a child life jacket, if you are bringing one, in the checked bag.
- Ask about pushchairs at the airline's desk before you reach the gate, and find out whether one will be useful at all on your boat.
- Weigh bags at the hotel in Bali, where it is simple to move things around.
Are there international flights?
Sources conflict, so check with the airline before you build a route on one. Wikipedia says Komodo Airport gained international status on 2 April 2024, with Kuala Lumpur service from September 2024 and a Singapore route taken over by Scoot. Neptune Liveaboards says there are no international flights. Sassy Mama notes Scoot's plan. Routes like these come and go, so read the airline's current timetable.
A direct flight from abroad would spare a family the Bali or Jakarta change, which is valuable with small children. If you find a service, look at how often it runs, and how you would get home if it were cancelled. A route with few weekly flights gives you fewer ways to recover from a disruption than a busy domestic one.
What entry steps apply to children?
These points come from UK government advice for UK citizens. If you hold another passport, check your own government's advice and Indonesian immigration.
- Passport validity. It must expire at least 6 months after arrival, with at least 2 blank pages. Check each child's passport on its own, not just a parent's.
- Visa. A 30-day visa on arrival is available for tourism. The price table on this page shows the UK government's figure per person.
- Arrival card. The All Indonesia arrival card must be completed online within 72 hours of arrival. It is free, and the UK government warns against sites requesting payment. Check how the official form handles children, and keep the confirmations on your phone.
On children travelling with one parent or with a non-parent, we cannot point you to an official Indonesian source. Ask your embassy and Indonesian immigration well before you travel, and ask what documents they expect you to carry. Have each child's passport details ready early, because boat sellers ask for them.
Does a Bali stop change anything else?
It can change your health planning. The CDC lists no malaria transmission in Bali's resort areas, and says some malaria medicines must be started days before the trip and continued during and after it. That listing covers Bali's resort areas only, so it does not settle the question for Flores and Komodo, and the timing of some medicines means you should see a clinician before you leave home, not from Bali. Our page on malaria and children in Komodo sets out what to raise with them.
It also changes the order of the holiday. Kimkim, a trip planner, lists a seven-day family route with three days on Bali's Bukit Peninsula before flying to Flores and Komodo. Putting Bali first gives children time to shake off a long flight before an early-morning boat. Putting it last gives you a buffer against a closed route or a late domestic flight, and a soft landing before the journey home. If you can spare the days, a night or two at each end covers both.
What else do families ask about getting to Labuan Bajo?
Can you fly directly to Labuan Bajo from abroad with a family?
Sources conflict. Wikipedia reports international status since April 2024 with Kuala Lumpur and Singapore services, while Neptune Liveaboards, an operator, says there are no international flights. Check the airline's current timetable before you plan around a direct route, and look at what happens if a flight is cancelled.
Should we stay a night before our Komodo boat with kids?
That is what Labuan Bajo Tourism, an operator, advises, because first morning flights land after day trips have gone. Neptune Liveaboards also advises against the earliest flight on boarding day. With children, a same-day arrival leaves little room for error.
What documents does a family need for Indonesia?
UK government advice for UK citizens lists a passport valid for at least 6 months after arrival with 2 blank pages, a visa on arrival option, and the free All Indonesia arrival card online within 72 hours of arrival. Other nationalities should check their own government's advice, and ask their embassy about children travelling without both parents.
How long is the flight from Bali to Labuan Bajo with kids?
Neptune Liveaboards puts it at about one hour fifteen minutes, on a route served by three to four airlines. Children do not change the flight time, but allow for check-in, a possible schedule change and the short drive from Komodo Airport into town.
Which published prices did we check?
Official park fees and public third-party listings, each with its source and the month we checked it. These are not our prices or offers. Fees and fares change, and sources sometimes disagree, so check the source before you rely on a figure.

How do I reach the desk?
Send your arrival plan and your children's ages by WhatsApp on +62 811-3823-875, or email the desk, and it will say what it can about timing a boat around your flights. Flights stay your own booking unless an offer says otherwise. The desk earns from boat bookings, not from your airline.
