There is no agreed best time to visit Komodo with kids. Four operators give four different calm windows, and the only months all four name are May, June, September and October. Komodo Resort, another operator, says wind and sailing approvals, not rain, decide whether a boat leaves. Asik Travel, an operator, reports dry-season closures in 2026, so leave spare days in any month.

Which months do sources call the best time to visit Komodo with kids?

Each of these companies sells trips, so each has some reason to describe a long season. Set side by side, their answers look like this. Season is the third decision in a Komodo family trip, after boat type and age fit.

Hello Flores, operatorMarch to June, and September to OctoberLeaves out July and August

komodoislandcruises.com, operatorMay, June, September and OctoberAlso leaves out July and August

We do not treat any row as the truth, and the overlap is no guarantee of calm water. It does show where the disagreement lies: the shoulder months at either end, and whether July and August count.

July and August are a question of crowds as much as water. Neptune Liveaboards, an operator, says those months coincide with school holidays and that the main sites see more boats. Komodo Resort, an operator, says the daily visitor cap bites in July and August, while quiet low-season days see about 400 to 500 visitors. The same company's family guide names April, May, September and October as the shoulder months for smaller crowds and easier booking.

Booking lead times follow the same curve. Casa de Capulet, a Labuan Bajo hotel, suggests booking a boat three to four days ahead in quiet months and two to three weeks ahead in June, July and August. Labuan Bajo Tourism, an operator, says boats can book out three to four weeks ahead in July. If your dates are tied to the school calendar, our page on Komodo in the school holidays looks at that in more detail.

Why does wind matter more than rain?

Because a wet boat still sails, and a boat without approval does not. Komodo Resort says the rainy season runs about December to March with the northwest monsoon, the southeast monsoon runs from about April to November, and wind rather than rain decides whether boats sail. It also says every tourist vessel leaving Labuan Bajo needs a sailing approval letter (SPB) from the port authority, and that the office stops issuing them when strong winds and high waves are forecast.

For a parent, this changes what to look up. A rainfall chart will not tell you whether your boat goes. Rainfall figures do not even agree: Komodo Resort's table gives Labuan Bajo 355 to 405 mm in January and 360 to 370 mm in February, with about 2,300 mm a year, while Wikipedia's article on the national park gives 800 to 1,000 mm a year. These describe different stations and areas, as Komodo Resort itself notes. Do not plan around either number.

Direction matters as well as strength. Scuba Guide, a dive publisher, says the park splits by monsoon, with northern and central sites at their best from about April to November and the south exposed then, with colder water. So a boat can have a good week in one part of the park and a rough one in another. Ask which way the route runs in your month, and if your child is prone to motion sickness, see our page on seasickness in Komodo.

Can you visit with kids in the rainy season?

You can try, though you should expect the plan to change. komodoislandcruises.com, an operator, says the rainy season brings rough seas and frequent cancellations and calls it unsuitable for family travel. Responsible Travel, a publisher, says few tours run in February. Both are general statements, and the turn of 2025 into 2026 shows what a disruption can look like:

  • Antara reported that the port authority temporarily closed cruises to Komodo and Padar after a December 2025 sinking, and suspended sailing approvals for the route until conditions improved.
  • Hey Bali, a local news site, reported that a second boat, the pinisi Dewi Anjani, sank off Pink Pier on 29 December 2025, and that the port authority suspended tourist boat operations from 30 December 2025 to 2 January 2026 using weather agency data.
  • Komodo Resort says the park closed in practice for most of January 2026, because the port authority stopped issuing sailing approvals. Indonesia Expat reported that routes reopened on 9 January 2026, so these two accounts do not match on how long the stoppage lasted.

A family set on December should know that this period falls inside what Komodo Resort calls the rainy season, and should have a land-based plan in Labuan Bajo or elsewhere. Rather than ask "will it sail?", ask "what happens to our money and our days if it does not?"

Can sailing stop in the dry season?

Yes. Asik Travel, an operator, reports that in 2026 the harbour master closed the Padar and Komodo routes on forecast high waves in late July, early August, 9 to 10 September and 13 to 15 September. Every one of those dates falls inside at least one source's calm window, and two of them fall in a month that all four sources like.

Other events can restrict waters too. Jawawa reported that the port authority's notice 04/MP-X/2026 restricted tourist activity in five park waters on 19 October 2026 during the KM Feronia search. Komodo Resort, which sells trips, said on a page dated 1 September 2026 that the park stayed open through the August 2026 earthquake, while Travel Weekly Asia reports nearly 1,000 tourists evacuated from Padar. The toll is on our page about Komodo safety with kids. Check the current position with the park.

Money is the sharp edge of this. The park's tariff page states that all tickets purchased cannot be cancelled and are non-refundable. Ask when your seller buys tickets on your behalf and who bears the loss if a closure follows, and keep the answer.

How hot does it get?

Expect heat, and read the figures as a wide range. Komodo Resort says days are around 27 to 30 degrees Celsius. Kanha Liveaboard, also an operator, gives 32 to 38 at midday. Wikipedia has around 40 in the May to October dry season. Plan for the hot end: walks early in the day, shade in the middle of it, and more water than you think a child will drink.

Some parents also ask whether season affects the dragons. A family blog from 2017 says dragons are less active from July to November because of the mating and nesting seasons, and the park authority separately notes that females guarding nests do not eat. This is not an official season, and it is not tied to any closure. We would not choose your month around it.

What if your dates are fixed?

Most families with school-age children have fixed dates, and you can still plan for disruption. These steps do more than picking a month:

  1. Put spare days at the end of the trip, so a closed route moves your boat day and leaves your flight home alone. Our family itinerary page shows how to fit them in.
  2. Start the boat early in your stay, for the same reason.
  3. Choose a base in Labuan Bajo you would not mind being stuck in for a day.
  4. Ask the seller what happens on a refused sailing approval: a new date, a different route, or a refund, and whether park tickets are already bought.
  5. Check that your travel insurance answers the same question, and read how it treats port closures.
  6. Book early in July and August, going by the lead times above.

What else do parents ask about timing a Komodo trip?

When is the best time to visit Komodo with children?

Sources differ. Hello Flores, Asik Travel, Neptune Liveaboards and komodoislandcruises.com, all operators, give four different windows, and all four include May, June, September and October. Those months are a reasonable starting point but carry no promise of calm seas or open routes.

What month has the calmest seas in Komodo for kids?

The operators name overlapping months, and none picks a single one. Neptune Liveaboards names June and September as its preferred months, and that is one operator's preference. Sea state depends on the wind in a given week and on which part of the park you sail in.

Can you visit Komodo with kids in the rainy season?

It is possible, but komodoislandcruises.com calls the rainy season unsuitable for family travel, and Responsible Travel says few tours run in February. In the 2025 to 2026 rainy season, sailing approvals were suspended for stretches. A family going then needs flexible dates and a backup plan on land.

Do boats get cancelled in the dry season?

Yes, it has happened. Asik Travel reports that the harbour master closed the Padar and Komodo routes on forecast high waves on several dates between late July and mid-September 2026. A date in these months carries no promise of sailing.

Is December a good month for Komodo with kids?

Komodo Resort places December at the start of the rainy season. Responsible Travel puts the rainy season at January to mid-March, so the two differ on December. The events of December 2025 and January 2026 show how disrupted that stretch can be. If school holidays leave you only December, protect the trip with spare days and clear written terms on closures.

How do I reach the desk?

Tell the desk your fixed dates and your children's ages by WhatsApp on +62 811-3823-875, or email the desk. It can tell you what sellers are saying for those dates. Sailing depends on the port authority, and bookings pay the desk, so check what it says against the sources here. The terms that apply are the ones in your offer.
