Komodo boat safety for families cannot be settled by a brochure or a permit. Recent incidents involved engine failure in bad weather, a reef strike at low tide and a capsize with documents in order. Ask operators about daylight routing, the day's sailing approval, child life jackets, crew and weather calls, and get the answers in writing.

What has gone wrong on these waters?

A question list is only useful if it comes from what actually happened. These are the reported events, with their dates. Several investigations were ongoing or reports preliminary, so the table records what was said and does not assign fault. No boat here is being called safe or unsafe beyond the report itself.

The fleet is large and varied, which is why generalising is hard. Kompas, using the harbourmaster's data, put the Labuan Bajo tourist fleet at 407 vessels on 17 July 2024, from pinisi and wooden boats to open-deck boats, fast boats and cruise ships. Reuters attributes Indonesia's boat accidents to bad weather and to lax standards under which vessels are often overloaded. The official accident ratios are on our Komodo safety with kids page, and they end before these sinkings.

Modifications are another concern. Kompas also quoted a local boat entrepreneur on extra rooms and lengthened decks on pinisi, work said to disregard balance and leave a boat easier to capsize. It is a single opinion, but it gives you a fair question: has this boat been altered since it was built, and who checked the result?

Which waters does the port authority flag?

Hey Bali published the port authority's ten high-risk areas, designated since 2023 for strong currents, waves, wind or whirlpools:

  • Kelor
  • Batu Tiga
  • Molo Strait
  • Padar Strait
  • Loh Kima
  • Luwu
  • Kerangga
  • Mauwang
  • Tatawa
  • Siaba Kecil

Ask which of these areas your route crosses and how the captain handles them on your day. Indonesia's transport safety committee told Kompas its investigators had mapped hazards, including a vortex in the waters by Padar and Komodo. A safer line exists at the cost of some 20 extra minutes, the committee said, and it is not one to run at night. Ask whether the boat takes the longer route, and whether your schedule leaves room for it. An itinerary too tight to spare 20 minutes tells you something.

Waters can also close during an emergency. During the KM Feronia search on 19 October 2026, Jawawa reported, port authority notice 04/MP-X/2026 limited tourist activity in five areas of park water.

What are the rules on night sailing?

Tourist boats in park waters are now required to anchor after dark. Indonesia Expat reported the rule alongside the reopening of routes on 9 January 2026, adding that captains are barred from night sailing, above all at the ten locations listed earlier. Separately, UK advice is to stay off the water after dark unless you are convinced the boat has the right equipment.

The rule came after a run of closures. After the December 2025 sinking, Antara reported, the port authority shut cruises to Komodo and Padar for a time and stopped granting sailing approvals on that route. Hey Bali separately reported a halt to tourist boat operations from 30 December 2025 until 2 January 2026, based on weather agency data.

For a family this has a practical result. Does any leg run after dark? Ask any operator to mark on the route where the boat will be at sunset each day. If the plan needs sailing after dark inside the park, ask how that fits the rule.

What should you ask about Komodo boat safety for families?

Ask these before paying. Asik Travel, an operator, suggests the first three items. The rest draw on checklists from other operators and on the incidents above. Neptune's and komodoislandcruises.com's lists come from sellers and describe what to ask, not what every boat offers.

What should you ask about Komodo boat safety for families?
QuestionWhy it matters
Do you sail between islands only in daylight?Asik Travel's first question; matches the rule above
Will you hold the harbour master's sailing approval for our day?Asik Travel's second; Komodo Resort says each departure from Labuan Bajo needs one
Is there a child-size jacket on board for each of our children, and in which sizes?Asik Travel's third. The UK government says suitable ones are not always on hand in Indonesia, so plan to pack your own if unsure
Are the railings secure, and what emergency communication equipment is on board? On the checklist from komodoislandcruises.com, along with air conditioning throughout the cabins, food children will eat and a crew used to families
How many crew go with each snorkel group?Neptune Liveaboards suggests asking, and says Indonesian boats often run close to one crew member for each guest
What are your rules for children in the tender and in the water?Neptune's own rules make a useful benchmark: jackets on for every tender ride, one named crew member per surface group, and an adult with any child in the water, anchored or not
Where are the ladders, the tender boarding point and the compressor?Neptune says a crew cannot childproof a liveaboard
Has the boat been altered since it was built?See the Kompas view on added decks and rooms
How many people will be aboard, including crew?Overloading is named in both Reuters and UK advice
What would you do if the engine failed in a strait, and who tells guests what is going on?Drawn from the December 2025 report and the family blog's account

Compare the replies. An operator who answers the life jacket question with a photo and a list of sizes has given you more to check than one who says the boat is very safe, though neither reply proves safety. Fit gets more detail under child life jackets in Komodo, and the boats themselves under Komodo family boats.

Does valid paperwork mean a safe boat?

No. Divernet reported that KM Feronia had its required sailing documents and that surface conditions were reported as relatively calm when it capsized. Those were early reports, and the cause was still under police investigation, so no conclusion follows about that boat. It does show that documents answer a narrower question than parents tend to assume.

Ask for paperwork anyway, because a boat that cannot produce it fails a basic test. Just do not stop there. No public audit or ranking of Komodo boats is available, so this site does not rank them and you should be wary of anyone who claims to.

Who decides if a boat can sail?

The port authority does, through the sailing approval letter known as the SPB. Komodo Resort, an operator, says no tourist vessel leaves Labuan Bajo without one, and that none are issued when forecasts show strong winds and high waves. Antara and Hey Bali describe the same mechanism. An operator cannot sell its way around a refused approval, whatever a booking says.

An approval is a minimum and not a command to go, so ask who on board can call off a stop after leaving harbour, and whether the family can too. Find out what a cancelled day means for your money and your route before you sign, and keep the answer.

What else do families ask about boat safety in Komodo?

How do I check if a Komodo boat is safe for my family?

You cannot verify that fully from outside. No public audit of Komodo boats is available. Ask about daylight routing, the day's sailing approval, jackets by size, crew numbers and any alterations, then compare the answers. A clear answer is not proof of safety. Keep the replies with your booking papers.

What should I ask a Komodo boat operator about safety?

Start with Asik Travel's three: daylight-only sailing between islands, the harbour master's approval for your date, and a child-size jacket per child. Then ask about railings, emergency communication, crew per snorkel group and what happens if an engine fails.

Are Komodo boats allowed to sail at night?

Not inside park waters, as reported. Indonesia Expat said in January 2026 that every tourist vessel there must anchor once it is dark, with ten emergency-prone locations singled out. Ask the crew how the rule works on your night.

Are Komodo boats safe for children?

There is no single answer, because the 407 vessels counted in 2024 range from open-deck boats to cruise ships and no public audit of them is available. Neptune Liveaboards says crew cannot childproof a liveaboard. Safety depends on the specific boat, the day's conditions and adult supervision.

How do I reach the desk?

If you want these questions put to a specific boat, send the desk the boat's name and your dates by WhatsApp +62 811 3823 875 or email the desk. We report what the operator tells us and do not vouch for a vessel. Because a request can turn into a paid booking, we are not a neutral party. Prices, any fee and the contracting company are set out in the offer, and it alone binds anyone.
