Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. Fees and fares change, and they are third-party figures, not our offers.
There is no single right Komodo boat for family travel, and no outside audit we can cite ranks them. Match the boat to your youngest child: length of transit, shade, a flat place to nap, stairs and ladders, and who sets the day's schedule. An operator's own minimum age can make the decision for you.
Which kinds of boat take families around Komodo?
Harbourmaster data reported by Kompas counted 407 tourist vessels in Labuan Bajo as of 17 July 2024, including pinisi (usually spelled phinisi in English listings), fast boats, open-deck boats, wooden boats and cruise ships. A fleet that size and that mixed means the label on a listing tells you little about how one particular boat would work for a five-year-old. Boat type is the first call in any Komodo family trip, and it shapes the Komodo family trip cost and the Komodo family itinerary that follow.
For a parent, the useful split is by how the trip runs, not by hull. The table sets out four formats families tend to weigh, what a named source says about each, and the question that format raises. No row is a recommendation.
| Format | What a named source says | What it asks of a child | Question for the seller |
|---|---|---|---|
| Speedboat day trip | Labuan Bajo Tourism, an operator, says its speedboat reaches Komodo Island in around two hours with stops. | Hours on a fast boat, then a bed ashore that night. | Where can a tired child lie down out of the sun? |
| Small wooden boat, overnight | A 2017 family blog describes two small bunk cabins and a small bathroom, with windows and door left open for the breeze. | Tight, warm sleeping quarters. The account is dated. | Can we see current photos of this boat's cabins? |
| Phinisi on a shared departure | Neptune Liveaboards, an operator, says most Indonesian liveaboards set a minimum age of ten on scheduled mixed-group departures, and that it takes children from eight on selected departures if a parent supervises and the child snorkels. | Fitting in with other guests, plus ladders and stairs. | What age do you accept on this date, in writing? |
| Whole boat on charter | Hello Flores, an operator, says it charters boats for toddler families with a stable low-freeboard swim platform and enough crew for one person to focus on supervision near water. | Less pressure from other guests. The hazards on board remain. | Which crew member watches the children near water? |
How long do the boats take from Labuan Bajo?
The two hours from Labuan Bajo Tourism, an operator, applies to its own speedboat reaching Komodo Island with stops along the way. The parents' site Sassy Mama gives a boat ride of one to two hours from Labuan Bajo to the park. They are measuring different journeys, so neither figure tells you what your day will feel like. Ask for the transit time between each stop on the route you are actually being sold.
That question matters most for the youngest children. Hello Flores, an operator, says toddlers need short transits, and a slow boat on a long leg can cancel out every other comfort it offers.
A quick crossing is not automatically the better one, though. Indonesia's transport safety committee told Kompas that investigations mapped dangerous spots, including a water vortex around Padar and Komodo islands, that a safer route adds about 20 minutes, and that the route should not be used at night. Ask which route the captain plans to take, and do not press a seller for the fastest option.
What makes a Komodo boat for family travel suit young children?
The sellers' own checklists overlap. Asik Travel, an operator, says to look for proper shade, a flat deck where a small child can nap, trustworthy railings and a crew used to children. Hello Flores adds that dragon treks are usually skipped or done by one parent while the other stays aboard with a toddler, which makes the boat the place your family spends most of its day. Judge the deck as a living room, not as a view.
On age, sellers give different limits. Hello Flores says there is no official park-wide minimum age for children on Komodo liveaboards and that individual operators typically set thresholds between 5 and 10 years old. Neptune Liveaboards, an operator, says it would not put a toddler aboard, while Hello Flores describes chartering boats for toddler families. The accepted age for your date is whatever the operator confirms in writing.
Three smaller details decide whether a family liveaboard in Komodo stays pleasant past the first night:
- Cabins. komodoislandcruises.com, an operator, says most boats offer private ensuite cabins for two adults, that some take children as extra passengers with or without an extra bed depending on layout, and that family-friendly cabins are limited. Our guide to family cabins on Komodo boats covers layouts in more detail.
- Food. Neptune Liveaboards says plain rice, noodles, grilled chicken and pancakes are effectively always available on its boats. That describes its own fleet only. komodoislandcruises.com advises bringing favourite snacks.
- Crew. Neptune Liveaboards says crew ratios on Indonesian boats are commonly around one crew member per guest, and that parents should ask how many crew go out with a snorkel group. The second number tells you more than the first.
What can a crew not childproof?
Neptune Liveaboards is blunt on this: a liveaboard has ladders, moving tenders, hot compressors and open rails, and the crew cannot childproof it. komodoislandcruises.com warns that toddlers on a cruise mean lots of stairs, bright sun and constant supervision on deck, and that children around five to seven need close help. Neither statement comes from a regulator, but both come from companies with a reason to play these things down, which is a fair reason to take them seriously.
In practice this means one adult on duty whenever a small child is on deck. Agree shifts before you board. If you are one parent with two children under seven, that changes which format works, and it is a better first question than cabin size.
Ask too how the boat came to look as it does. A Labuan Bajo boat entrepreneur told Kompas that interior modifications adding rooms or extending decks on pinisi ignore balance and make boats easier to overturn. That is one person's view and not an official finding. It still justifies asking whether cabins or decks were added after the boat was built, and who approved the change.
Life jackets belong on this list as well, and UK travel advice warns that you may have to bring your own for a child in Indonesia. Our page on child life jackets covers sizing and what sellers claim.
Who sets the schedule on each type?
On a day trip, the operator's route and the other passengers set the rhythm. On a shared overnight departure, you join a plan made for a group. Neptune Liveaboards warns that joining a boat of serious divers alters things for everyone aboard, and our comparison of private and shared boats has the question to ask. With a whole boat you can negotiate meal times and stops, and anything you agree belongs in the offer.
Above all of these sits the port authority. No boat leaves Labuan Bajo without the port authority's sailing approval letter (SPB), according to Komodo Resort, an operator, and that letter is withheld when strong winds and high waves are forecast. No seller of any format controls that decision.
Which published prices did we check?
Official park fees and public third-party listings, each with its source and the month we checked it. These are not our prices or offers. Fees and fares change, and sources sometimes disagree, so check the source before you rely on a figure.

What do recent accidents change about the questions you ask?
The sinkings since December 2025 are set out in our guide to Komodo safety with kids. The UK government separately warns that sea conditions can change rapidly, that safety standards vary, that vessels can be crowded and overloaded, and it advises avoiding travel after dark unless you are satisfied the vessel is suitably equipped.
These reports do not show that any boat type or seller is safer than another, and we do not draw that conclusion. They do show why the questions below deserve an answer about your specific boat and date, not a general reassurance.
Which features should you confirm before paying?
Asik Travel suggests three questions before any money moves, and komodoislandcruises.com and Labuan Bajo Tourism add the rest. These are sellers' lists, and they make a sensible start when judging whether a Komodo boat is family friendly. Keep the answers.
- Does the boat sail between islands only in daylight?
- Does it hold the harbour master's sailing approval for your day, and what happens to your money if approval is refused?
- Does it carry a child-size life jacket for every child, in your children's sizes?
- Are the railings secure, and is there air conditioning in all cabins?
- What emergency communication equipment is on board?
- Has the crew worked with families, and is there child-friendly food?
- What exactly does the price cover? Labuan Bajo Tourism says its cruise price covers the cabin, meals, drinks, harbour transfers in the city, snorkelling gear, paddleboard, canoe and guide, while park fees, flights, insurance and alcohol are extra. That is one operator's list, so ask for yours.
Our longer set of boat safety questions goes further. The price table on this page shows published figures for several of these formats from the operators and brokers it names. Those are other companies' numbers, not ours.
What else do families ask about Komodo boats?
Which type of boat is best for a family in Komodo?
No ranking can settle this, because no outside safety audit of Komodo boats is available. Start from your youngest child. A toddler family is looking for shade, short transits and a flat place to nap, while a ten-year-old reaches the minimum age that Neptune Liveaboards says most scheduled mixed-group departures set.
Is a phinisi safe for children in Komodo?
We cannot rate any boat's safety and will not give a yes or no. The UK government warns that safety standards vary in Indonesia, and Neptune Liveaboards, an operator, says a liveaboard cannot be childproofed. Ask about daylight sailing, the sailing approval and child-size jackets for your specific date.
Are liveaboards suitable for kids in Komodo?
That depends on the child's age and the operator. Hello Flores says thresholds usually sit between 5 and 10 years old, and Neptune Liveaboards says ten is typical on scheduled mixed-group departures. Confirm the accepted age for your date before you plan around it.
What should families look for in a Komodo boat?
Asik Travel, an operator, lists proper shade, a flat deck for naps, trustworthy railings and a crew used to children. Add the number of crew who go out with a snorkel group, which Neptune Liveaboards suggests asking about.
Do Komodo boats have child-friendly features?
Some do, and the label alone will not tell you which. Hello Flores describes charter boats with a low-freeboard swim platform. Ask for photos and details of the exact boat, not the fleet.

How do I reach the desk?
Send your children's ages, your dates and the format you lean towards by WhatsApp on +62 811-3823-875, or email the desk. The desk answers with what it can find, and nothing is held until an offer names the boat, the price and the company you would contract with. The desk can earn from a booking you make through it, so weigh its answers with that in mind.
