Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. Fees and fares change, and they are third-party figures, not our offers.

Kids scuba diving in Komodo starts, on paper, at age 8 with PADI's Bubblemaker in under 2 metres of water, and junior certified diving from 10, according to the operator KomodoDiving. In practice the park prohibits uncertified diving at its dive sites, operators set their own ages, and current and cold water narrow the choice further than a certificate does.

What does each age allow for kids scuba diving in Komodo?

Two different things get mixed together here: what a training agency permits and what a Komodo operator accepts. The table separates them. Where a limit comes from an operator, treat it as that operator's statement and confirm it with whoever would take your child in the water.

Read as a ladder, the table looks tidy. It is not a promise of anything at a particular boat or dive centre. A child of 8 who could join a Bubblemaker elsewhere needs to ask whether a Komodo operator offers it, for reasons the next section explains. Teenagers working towards certification have the most options, and our guide to Komodo with teenagers looks at how a trip changes at that age.

A course also takes time out of a holiday. Neptune Liveaboards, an operator, says a Junior Open Water course on the boat takes roughly four days. On a short trip, that can be most of the trip, and it needs the rest of the family to be content while one child trains.

Does the park allow try dives?

This question has no clean answer, and we would rather say so than guess. The park's visitor protocol prohibits scuba diving at park dive sites without dive certification. PADI's Bubblemaker and other introductory programmes, by their nature, take children who hold no certificate. Komodo Resort, an operator, says its introductory programme accepts children from age 10. Ask the dive operator how these fit together inside the park.

We do not know how operators reconcile the two, and a seller's reassurance does not settle it. Put the question to the operator directly:

  • Where exactly will the session happen, and is that spot inside the park?
  • How does your programme fit with the park's rule on uncertified diving?
  • Would you put that answer in writing?
  • What happens to our payment if a ranger or the port authority stops the session?

Certified or not, the park also lists a scuba diving activity charge per person per day on top of entry, shown on its tariff page. The price table on this page gives the published figures for both.

Which sites do operators rule out for children?

Komodo Resort names three strong-current sites as unsuitable for any child: Batu Bolong, Crystal Rock and The Cauldron. Keep those names on your phone. If a boat's route includes them, ask what your child will be doing during that dive and who will be with them.

Do not read that list as saying everywhere else is gentle. KomodoDiving warns that even beginner sites can see sudden current changes. For a parent, the useful question is not whether a site has a beginner label but who decides on the day, and whether that person will call off a dive after you have paid for it. The same logic applies at the surface, which our page on snorkelling in Komodo with kids covers for siblings who stay out of the deep water.

How cold and strong can the water be?

Colder than many families expect of the tropics. KomodoDiving says south Komodo water can drop to 19 degrees Celsius, so check where the boat goes. That one figure should shape the conversation about kit. Scuba Guide, a dive publisher, adds a seasonal angle: it says northern and central sites are at their best from about April to November, while the south is exposed then, with colder water. Ask which part of the park a child's dive would be in, and in which month.

KomodoDiving also says not all dive centres carry equipment sized for small children. An operator should be willing to tell you in advance what it has. Ask for the sizes and thickness of the suits it holds, and whether it has dealt with a child of your child's build. If the answer is vague, assume the fit is your problem, and reconsider.

What should you check about a dive operator?

Before anyone in your family dives, the UK government advises checking the operator's credentials and insurance cover, confirming oxygen is on board, and asking whether divers can be moved to a hyperbaric chamber. Those questions apply to every diver and carry extra weight when the diver is eleven. Add these for a child:

  1. Who will be in the water with my child, and what is their certification?
  2. What is the student-to-instructor ratio? Hello Flores, an operator, gives a maximum of 4 to 1 for ages 10 to 11. Ask whether you can have fewer.
  3. What is the maximum depth you will take a child of this age, and who enforces it? KomodoDiving gives the limits in the table above.
  4. Which sites on this itinerary would you not take a child to?
  5. What equipment do you hold in my child's size?
  6. Does our travel insurance cover a child diving at this level? Ask your insurer, because the operator cannot answer for them.

Age rules for other activities differ again, and our page on Komodo age rules collects what sellers say about boats and treks. This page is general information and not diving advice. A dive professional and a doctor who knows your child should have the final say on readiness.

When can children fly after diving?

Neptune Liveaboards says the guidance is a minimum of 18 hours after repeated dives before flying. Count it backwards from your flight: a last dive at 16:00 rules out anything before 10:00 the next morning, and most families will want a wider gap than that. Leave more room than the minimum, and ask your dive professional or doctor whether a different figure applies to your child.

Will a dive boat suit the rest of the family?

Often only one child is diving and the others stay at the surface. Neptune Liveaboards warns that a family among serious divers changes the trip for everyone and that some operators quietly discourage it. Its suggested question is how many other non-divers or juniors are booked. Ask that, then ask what a younger sibling does during each dive and which adult stays with them.

Permits can trip you up as well. Komodo Resort says the daily visitor cap covers dive sites as well as the main islands. Ask the seller how your young diver is registered for each dive day, and what happens to the plan if a site or session is full.

What else do parents ask about children diving in Komodo?

What age can kids scuba dive in Komodo?

PADI's Bubblemaker starts at 8 in water under 2 metres, and Komodo Resort, an operator, says its own introductory programme starts at 10. KomodoDiving, also an operator, describes junior certified limits from ages 10 to 14. The operator's own rule applies on the day, so confirm it first.

How deep can a 10 year old dive in Komodo?

KomodoDiving says junior certified divers aged 10 to 11 are limited to 12 metres and must dive with a certified adult or professional. Neptune Liveaboards gives the same depth. A site's current or temperature can still rule out a dive that the depth limit would allow.

Can children do Bubblemaker in Komodo?

We cannot say for certain. PADI offers the programme from age 8, but the park's protocol prohibits diving at park dive sites without certification, so ask the dive operator how the two fit. Ask the operator where the session would take place and how it fits the rule.

Are Komodo dive sites suitable for children?

Some are ruled out by name: Komodo Resort says Batu Bolong, Crystal Rock and The Cauldron are not suitable for any child. KomodoDiving warns that even beginner sites can see sudden current changes, so a site's label is not enough. Ask who decides on the day.

Which published prices did we check?

How do I reach the desk?

Tell the desk your child's age, any certification and your dates by WhatsApp on +62 811-3823-875, or email the desk. It can pass on what operators say, and it earns from bookings, so keep that in mind. Only an accepted offer confirms a course, a date or a place.
