Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. Fees and fares change, and they are third-party figures, not our offers.
There is at least one hospital in Labuan Bajo for families to plan around, and sources differ on whether there are one or two. Siloam's owner lists emergency rooms, ICU and paediatrics. Patients were moved outdoors after the August 2026 earthquake and current status needs a live check. Serious cases may leave Flores, so insurance should cover evacuation.
What medical facilities are in Labuan Bajo?
Three names come up, each from a different kind of source and date. None of this is an endorsement, and we make no claim about the quality of care at any of them.
| Facility | Who says | What they say | Date of source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Siloam Hospitals Labuan Bajo | First REIT, the property's owner | Three storeys, operating since January 2016, emergency rooms, ICU and neonatal ICU, paediatrics; "the only hospital in the regency" | Company page, checked November 2026 |
| Komodo Regional Hospital | Indonesian police | Named alongside Siloam during a patient evacuation | August 2026 |
| Labuan Bajo International Medical Centre | Jakarta Globe | Opened by Siloam at the Marina complex, 24-hour emergency response, open to insured and corporate patients | 2022 |
There is a conflict on the headline point. First REIT calls Siloam the only hospital in the regency, while Indonesian police name a second one. Do not plan on either until a local check confirms it is admitting patients. For a parent the practical step is simple: before you travel, ask your insurer which facility it would direct you to, and whether the Marina centre still operates, since the report of its opening is from 2022.
Is there a hospital in Labuan Bajo for families with young children?
On paper, yes. First REIT lists paediatrics and a neonatal ICU at Siloam. What that listing cannot tell you is whether a paediatrician is on duty on the day your child needs one. It says what the hospital offers and gives no staffing roster. Do not assume a children's specialist will be present at any given hour.
The one patient account here dates from 2018. A sailing blogger described an emergency room visit at the Labuan Bajo hospital in 2018: about a 10-minute wait, a doctor with very good English, and lab work on site. That is one adult's experience, eight years ago, before the 2022 medical centre and before the 2026 earthquake. The price table on this page shows what that traveller reported paying for the doctor's visit. Read that figure as a dated data point rather than a current charge.
A sensible way to prepare is to write down, before the trip, your child's weight, allergies, regular medicines and vaccination record, on paper and in a phone note. Any doctor you see will ask for these, and it spares a stressed parent from having to remember them. Malaria deserves a separate conversation with your own doctor. Our page on malaria and Komodo for children sets out what the health authorities say.
What happened to the hospitals in the 2026 earthquake?
Indonesian police reported patients being moved from Siloam Hospital and Komodo Regional Hospital in Labuan Bajo to outdoor tents after the 15 August 2026 earthquake, as a precaution against aftershocks and structural failure. That report describes the emergency response at the time. It does not tell you whether either building has since been cleared, repaired or returned to full service.
So treat every capability listed above as unconfirmed for now. Before you commit to dates, ask your travel insurer's assistance line or your operator whether each facility is admitting patients and whether its emergency room and paediatric care are running. Ask again in the week before you fly. If you cannot get a clear answer, assume the nearest fully working care is further away and plan around that, especially with an infant or a child with a known condition.
When do serious cases leave Flores?
Medical evacuation from Komodo is part of the picture, and a family should plan for it. Komodo Island Cruises, an operator, says the Labuan Bajo hospital is limited and that serious cases require evacuation to Bali or Singapore. It is not a medical authority, so read that as an operator's planning assumption. An older example points the same way: Smithsonian magazine reports that a ranger bitten in 2009 could not be treated at the small medical centre on Flores and was flown to Bali. That was before the Siloam hospital opened in 2016, so it does not describe today's capacity.
Distance adds to this. A boat in the park is further from any hospital than a hotel in town, and we can give no reliable figure for the trip back from any particular anchorage. Ask the captain, for your own route, how long the return to Labuan Bajo would take from the furthest stop, what happens after dark given the current night-sailing rules, and who on board has first-aid training. If your child has a medical condition, take the return times to your doctor. Our Komodo boat safety questions go further, and Komodo safety with kids covers the wider risks.
What should your insurance cover?
The baseline for travel insurance comes from the UK government, which advises confirming that insurance covers local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation. Komodo Island Cruises goes further, calling insurance with evacuation cover non-negotiable. Ask your insurer directly, in writing:
- Are children covered on the same terms as adults, and is each child named?
- Does the policy cover evacuation from Flores to Bali or further, and does it say who decides that it is needed?
- Does a parent's travel and accommodation count when a child is flown out?
- Are boat trips, snorkelling and any diving covered, and to what depth?
- Is there a 24-hour assistance number, and does it work from Indonesia?
- Does the insurer pay the hospital directly, or do you pay first and claim later? The 2022 report says the Marina centre takes insured and corporate patients.
Budget for this before you compare boats. Where it fits among other costs is covered on the Komodo family trip cost page. Nothing on this page is medical advice, and the disclaimer sets out the limits of this guide.
What should a family first-aid kit cover?
Komodo Resort, an operator and not a medical body, says coral cuts are the most common minor injury and advises a first aid kit with children's medications, antiseptic and waterproof bandages. Keep any prescriptions in the bag that stays with you on the boat. Ask your own doctor or pharmacist what belongs in the kit for each child's age and weight, and take the kit ashore on walks. A boat's first-aid box is a question to put to the crew before sailing, and it does not replace your own.
What do parents ask about medical care in Labuan Bajo?
Is there a children's doctor in Labuan Bajo?
First REIT lists paediatrics at Siloam Hospitals Labuan Bajo, but that does not tell you a specialist will be on duty on a given day. Ask your insurer or the hospital before relying on it, especially since the August 2026 earthquake.
What happens if a child gets hurt on a Komodo boat?
Ask before sailing who on board handles an injury and how they call for help. UK advice lists 118 for an ambulance. Ask also how long the return to Labuan Bajo takes from your stops and what first-aid equipment is on board.
Do we need evacuation insurance for Komodo with kids?
Plan as if you do. The UK government advises confirming cover for unexpected medical evacuation, and one operator calls it non-negotiable because serious cases may be sent to Bali or Singapore. Check that each child is named on the policy.
What is the emergency number in Labuan Bajo?
The UK government gives 118 as Indonesia's emergency medical number for an ambulance. Save it along with your insurer's assistance line before you leave home, and keep both on a second adult's phone too.
Which published prices did we check?
Official park fees and public third-party listings, each with its source and the month we checked it. These are not our prices or offers. Fees and fares change, and sources sometimes disagree, so check the source before you rely on a figure.
